DEA’s Red Ribbon Message for 2025: Life Is a Puzzle, Solve It Drug Free

Every October, communities across the United States unite under a powerful symbol: the red ribbon. It’s more than just a piece of fabric—it’s a pledge to live drug-free and honor the legacy of DEA Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, whose sacrifice sparked a nationwide movement. In 2025, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is once again leading the charge with its annual Red Ribbon Week Campaign, reaffirming its commitment to prevention, education, and community empowerment.
In addition, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) also recognizes October as the National Substance Use and Misuse Prevention Month and partners with the DEA to hold an annual campus PSA contest.
What Is the Red Ribbon Week Campaign?
Launched in 1985 following Camarena’s tragic death at the hands of drug traffickers, the Red Ribbon Week Campaign has grown into the largest drug prevention initiative in the U.S. It encourages youth, families, and schools to take a stand against substance abuse and promote healthy, drug-free lifestyles.
2025 Theme: Life is a Puzzle, Solve it Drug Free
This year’s Red Ribbon theme is “Life is a Puzzle, Solve it Drug Free,” highlighting how living a drug-free lifestyle helps build a stronger and brighter future, one piece at a time.
This year’s theme, chosen from a nationwide student contest, emphasizes the connection between mental health and substance use. It’s a timely reminder that kindness—to ourselves and others—is a powerful antidote to the pressures that often lead to drug misuse. The DEA is spotlighting this message through educational materials, school partnerships, and community events throughout Red Ribbon Week (October 23–31).
Celebrating Champions of Prevention
The DEA Community Outreach recognizes individuals and organizations that exemplify the campaign’s values. From educators and law enforcement officers to youth leaders and nonprofit advocates, these champions are making a tangible difference in their communities. Their stories serve as inspiration and proof that prevention works.
