Insights from Construction Safety Week 2025: Creating a Culture of Safety

Construction Safety Week 2025

As many gear up for Construction Safety Week 2025, it’s a perfect time to reflect on the importance of safety in the construction industry. This annual event, taking place from May 5-9, is dedicated to promoting a culture of safety and ensuring that every worker returns home safely at the end of each day.

Construction Safety Week’s motto this year is “All in Together (Plan • Own • Commit)”. This theme emphasizes the collective responsibility all share in maintaining a safe work environment. It highlights the importance of planning, owning, and committing to safety in every aspect of work.

Agenda – Safety Week Events

May 5 – Plan with Precision

Starting every day with a strong plan is a key step taken by highly successful teams. This involves considering every aspect of each task and project, from workforce, materials and timelines to potential hazards and heck even weather conditions. By anticipating challenges and preparing for the unexpected, we can prevent injuries and incidents before they occur.

May 6 – Identifying High Energy Hazards

Identifying the sources that can result in serious injuries or fatalities and implementing precautions and controls is critical to maintaining a safe workplace.

Sometimes referred to as “Stuff That Could Kill You” (STCKY) these hazards can include:

  • Falls (from a height or a falling object)
  • Pinch/Crush (from moving machinery parts, etc.)
  • Stressed/Tensioned (release of harnessed/stored energy such as hydraulics)
  • Motion (machinery, equipment, vehicles, etc.)
  • Lifts (forklifts, cranes, etc.)
  • Shock/Electrical (power lines, cords, etc.)
  • Toxic & Flammable (hazardous chemicals and materials)

May 7 – Own Your Part

Safety is a shared responsibility. Every team member must understand their role in the safety plan and be vigilant in identifying and addressing any changes that could impact safety. From the moment someone is hired and is drug tested to the moment one gets behind the controls of some equipment or steps out onto a jobsite — ensuring safety is everyone’s responsibility. This proactive approach empowers everyone to take action and adapt the plan as needed, fostering a culture of trust and respect on every project.

May 8 – Engage and Empower Team Members

When you empower and acknowledge your team, they become more engaged. As a result, they are more committed to excellence and ensuring safety and quality. Providing training, development opportunities and including individuals in decision making and suggestions helps to solidify and build that empowerment and engagement.

May 9 – Commit to Excellence

A commitment to safety excellence is reflected in the precision and intention we bring to our work. By following the plan exactly and working together, everyone can manage all aspects of the construction process to ensure the highest levels of safety and performance.

Safety Culture – Activities and Resources

During Construction Safety Week, some companies across the industry may host various events and activities to reinforce safety practices. These may include toolbox talks, safety drills, and interactive workshops. Resources such as planning playbooks, daily topic overviews, and best practices guides are available through Construction Safety Week to help companies plan and execute their Safety Week activities effectively.

The Impact of Construction Safety Week

The impact of Construction Safety Week extends beyond the event itself. By fostering a culture of safety, one can significantly reduce incident rates and create safer work environments.

Statistics

A study conducted by the Associated Builders and Contractors, found the following:

  • According to the Associated Builders and Contractors’ Safety Performance Report, top-performing companies that implement the best practices can achieve incident rates nearly six times safer than the industry average.
  • Substance abuse prevention programs – where drug and alcohol policies were in place and testing was conducted, they saw a 47% reduction in Total Reportable Incident Rates (TRIR) and a 48% reduction of Days Away, Restricted, or Transferred.

Join the Movement

Construction Safety Week is a powerful reminder of the importance of safety in this industry. By participating in this event, all can contribute to building a safer future for everyone. Let’s come together, plan with precision, own our part, and commit to excellence. Together, everyone can make a difference.
